Obra Dinn 07:16
Our final journey was made Each of us suffering a tragic fate Whether by monster or treacherous friends We all have met our end Forever shall we sail this ghostly ship Our souls bound to this creaking vessel On this eternal trip We readily tell our stories To all who enter our decks Yet to know our tales Is to join our immortal crew Cursed by the things we've done Horrible unspeakable acts Obra Dinn It turned us into what we've become Davey Jones his puppets Obra Dinn Forever adrift No port to line our ships Nor a bed to lay our heads No inn that will serve our kind Undead and damned Forever lost in time Redemption will never be ours Release will never be mine

Adamastor 08:02
Even as I spoke, an immense shade Materialized in the night air Grotesque and enormous stature (maldito Adamastor) With heavy jowls, and unkempt beard Scowling from shrunken, hollow eyes Its complexion earthly and pale Its hair grizzled and matted with clay Its mouth coal black, its teeth yellow with clay Maldito Adamastor Maldita fama (spoken word) "Que ameaço divino ou que segredo Este clima e este mar nos apresenta, Que mor cousa parece que tormenta? I am that vast, secret promontory You Portuguese call the Cape of Storms Which neither Ptolomy, Pompey, Strabo, Pliny, nor any authors knew of. Here Africa Ends. Here its coast concludes in this, My vast inviolate plateau, Extending southwards towards the pole And, by your daring, struck to my very soul. Maldito Adamastor Maldita fama

Sirens 08:52
(Spoken Word) I watched everything in silence on the beach line With my eyes suspended on the passive sky; Oh new moon of October, bring the rain and the winds, Prepare my soul to whisper, adjust my mouth To murmur all torments! (1st Section) Haunting clouds of violent storms Come down on my convicted carcass I fell my body levitate, in the cry of the litany, In the prayer of the damned, in the plagues of the besieged, And it begins… It delivers me from the famine that consumes me, from this cold; It delivers me from the evil of the animal within; It delivers me from pain and one feels blessed It engenders me to dive in the waves! (Final Section) From this song of the Sirens, who evades? Who escapes it’s dismal beguile? The chants are signs of perdition. I drown. As if there was a charm, a strange magic, The sun slowly floats amidst the shores of the day. The song strips my corsair body, it dries my owl vein, It rips from my chest the misery, misfortune, despair. From this song of the Sirens, who evades? Who escapes it’s dismal beguile? The chants are signs of perdition. I drown.

Shipwrecked 10:51
In the midst of black salt Beating at stern and starboard I lost sight In the raging undulating mass With a mighty crash Our ship was smashed Into the rocks And when I woke I could feel only agony Not a living soul to behold From the hellish blue sky The sun casts its gaze upon me Yet in the dark My body is consumed by frost I have hungered now for many a day Do I gorge on the flesh of my own broken limbs Drink my own blood from slashed wrists Do I fill my belly with gravel and stone To throw myself into the ocean and drown Be done with this foolish struggle for survival Imprisoned by emptiness With the waters as my warden End my suffering Erase me from history Let my flesh be rotten My life extinguished Geketend aan deze rots Getekend in mijn trots Slechts de eeuwige ruis Als mijn enige metgezel De golven Zij blijven immer spoelen Doch zij voeren aan mij Geen soelaas Mijn lot is beslist Ik vind mijn einde Op deze steen

I have been the shroud of perdition amidst the glimmer of hope I have been the erratic wonderer of the desultory pond But by the dooming kismet of hazard dismay I stranded In this hellish black mire of putrefaction purview This unending plain of nasty mud and nidorous remains The ocean is flat, the sky looks dim and my body shivers For as far as I can see, no life to behold, but carcasses aplenty As if the abyssal floor has risen up and the world has rotten As if the air has been blighted by the atrophy of existence Two days in famine I walked, with miserably blotted mind Through the blackness of this forlorn mise en scène This surge of hope in the form of a monolith I gaze Down that slope into the canyon I slide through the ghostly haze To witness the conundrum on the white stone, how strange Cryptic cipher, figures I know, words I can’t discern Humans with bulging eyes and fishlike membranes, The horror scrimmages ‘till my abhorrence gains Shrieks of ghastly stern increase In noisome grim I behold The loathsome creature exposed Like a stupendous monster of torment Hideous head venting inscrutable clamor In trepidation I run Through the carcasses, through the mud Back on the vessel of my demise This gigantic storm motions a preferable end for me This drug that transient me into the surcease realms Delaying me to a dormant commuter of psychotropic domain I foil to the visions of the colossal abnormality Haunting me in the growling crooked moon While it ebbs in its crystal ensnaring perversion They crawl and flounder the depths while waiting Their rise upon the shores of men These nameless ocean specters in their slimy shudder That swain the obelisk inscriptions, praising their Polyphemus God I choose to be no more, unrestrained finally from this abated mind I lumber against the door in a final lament as I see it The grasping hand of the ghoul reaching out to me "I have dreamed of a day when they may rise above the billows to drag down in their reeking talons the remnants of puny, war-exhausted mankind I have dreamed of a day when the land shall sink, and the dark ocean floor shall ascend amidst universal pandemonium"

Paardenmarkt 08:19
The clock of postponed death is ticking Tides turn at the Moon’s command The gas will shortly start leaking The sea will bleed the contaminated sand Unconscious decisions Expounded The appending catastrophe Once belligerent nations Entangled The ravenous future Biological nightmare Upon Europe’s shores No way to escape No way to redeem Apart the ammunition will tear While humanity deplores Fishless scape Lifeless stream The clock of postponed death has rang Tides still turn at the Moon’s command The mustard gas contaminates The ocean now bleeds tarnish sands

about

Leagues from land, where the horizons are endless and the delineations of man are meaningless, there are different kingdoms – forever unrestrained and forever beyond our grasp. The surface of the sea is the fluid border between a realm of wind, waves, storms and the screams of lonely, winged explorers and a dominion of unfathomable silence, unknowable depths and secrets shrouded in impenetrable darkness. The fabled albatross carries curses through the boiling clouds, while the forgotten Kraken shifts in the silt, dreaming where the waters of different oceans blend, their currents entwining far from the light. These dual empires will never be ours; they will never bow before our thrones of gold...

With the surging power of their progressively minded black metal, Thermohaline summon up the secrets of the hidden depths and ride upon the cold winds that rage across the seas. They celebrate the ancient halls beyond the faintest glimpse of light and revel in the terrors that stalk the tales of babbling madmen and old sailors who have long forgotten the feel of earth beneath their feet. Bringing together the exceptional talents of Lennart Janssen (Druon Antigon), Ignacio Elias Rosner (IER, Uroboros) and Nuno Lourenço (Salqiu, 0-Nun) this unique project captures moments of beauty, moments of sanity-shaking fear and the essence of the incredible might of the oceans that encircle our planet. Myths, mystery and overwhelming science collide in an enthralling, consuming, atmospheric creation. Thermohaline preserve the cold heart of black metal whilst crashing against its banks and flooding its many tributaries, dragging strange debris and unexpected treasures back into its chill waters. The results are both stunning and utterly remarkable, a new vision for black metal which the musicians themselves refer to as ‘nautical dementia’. Infused with emotion, rife with melody, yearningly familiar and yet shockingly alien...the waters of the Maelström await you.

Slipped into the consciousness of the few via an unpromoted digital release in January, Onism Productions are now about to launch this mighty vessel of marvels on CD on March 26th. As precious as pearls and as unpredictable as the tides, Maelström will steal your heart and leave you forever enchanted by the legends of the sea. Thermohaline are a truly special band, an elemental force that once heard can never be forgotten.
